Although the possibility of gaining weight while taking lithium is well known, this side effect does not affect everyone who takes the medication. Approximately 25% of people taking lithium gain weight, according to a review article published in the medical journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica.?? After analyzing all relevant published medical studies, the authors reported an average weight gain of approximately 10 to 26 pounds among those who experience this troubling side effect. Although the biological mechanisms that lead to lithium-related weight gain are not entirely clear, researchers speculate that several processes are likely involved. Additionally, several factors can influence the likelihood of gaining weight while youre taking lithium. Timing and Risk Factors Most people with bipolar disorder take lithium long term to stabilize mood and prevent manic and depressive episode relapses. Your risk of gaining weight while taking lithium is greatest during the first two years of treatment reports the author of a 2016 International Journal of Bipolar Disorders review article.?? Lithium-related weight gain appears to level off after the first two years, although you might also gain weight for other reasons unrelated to the medication. Your risk of gaining weight while taking lithium might be increased if youre already carrying some excess weight when you start taking the medication. In addition, some evidence suggests that the risk of lithium-related weight gain could be dose-dependent. This means that the likelihood of weight gain increases along with lithium level in your bloodstream. However, not all research studies have found this relationship, as noted in the 2016 International Journal of Bipolar Disorders study.?? Taking other medications that might also cause weight gain along with lithium also increases your risk of putting on extra pounds. Common examples of such drugs include: Clozaril (clozapine)Depakote (valproate)Risperdal (risperidone)Seroquel (quetiapine)Zyprexa (olanzapine) Why Does Lithium Cause Weight Gain? Despite the fact that lithium has been used in the United States for the treatment of treat bipolar disorder since 1970, the mechanisms that provoke weight gain in some people remain unclear. Several theories have been proposed. These processes may work alone or in combination to cause weight gain in people on lithium therapy.?? Early weight gain after starting lithium therapy could represent regaining pounds that were previously lost unintentionally. This situation might apply if you experienced a manic episodeâ"which can lead to weight loss due to disinterest in eating and increased activityâ"before starting lithium. Lithium often triggers increased thirstiness. Quenching your thirst with high-calorie beverages, such as full-calorie soda or fruit juice, is a possible contributor to weight gain. Lithium might also cause sodium and water retention in people who consume a high-salt diet, which can lead to added body weight. Reduced thyroid function, or hypothyroidism,?? is a well-known potential complication of long-term lithium treatment. This condition leads to a reduced metabolic rate, which in turn leads to weight gain. Women taking lithium are significantly more likely to develop hypothyroidism than are men, as reported in a 2013 Thyroid Research review article.?? Other hormones and brain signaling chemicals that affect hunger, blood sugar regulation, and fat and energy storage might play a role in lithium-related weight gain. As these processes are very complex and regulated at multiple levels in the body, additional research is needed to determine the possible influence of lithium. A Word From Verywell We understand your concern about gaining weight while on lithium therapy. Weight gain is understandably distressing both in terms of your self-image, and your physical and mental well-being. Keep in mind, however, that lithium-associated weight gain only occurs in approximately 25 percent of people who take the medication. Additionally, there are several common-sense steps you can take to minimize and perhaps even avoid this side effect, including:?? Limit your consumption of high-calorie beverages, such as full-calorie sodas, fruit juices, sugary coffee drinks, and smoothies. Drink low-calorie or noncaloric beverages to quench your thirst. Water with a twist of lemon or lime, hot or iced herbal tea and decaffeinated coffee are a few healthful options. Stay physically active. If youre not getting much exercise currently, talk with your doctor about getting started. Remember, anything that gets you up and moving counts as physical activity. Walking is always a good option, but the possibilities are almost limitless.Monitor your weight regularly. If the number on the scale starts creeping up or your clothes feel tighter, talk with your doctor about the next steps. She might recommend consulting with a dietitian to review your current diet, a change in your medications or their dosages, or another strategy. Contact your doctor right away if you develop any signs or symptoms that might suggest an underactive thyroid gland such as a lump near your Adams apple; unexplained constipation; feeling cold most of the time; dry hair and/or skin; forgetfulness, irregular menstrual periods; and unusual sensations in your hands or feet.

Migration and Disease in Africa during European...
The Relationship between Migration and Disease in Africa during European Imperialism During the era of European Imperialism, from approximately 1880 to 1930, an increasing number of Europeans began to colonize West Africa. Because of this colonization many African natives migrated eastward, inadvertently transporting diseases to which the East Africans were not immune (Ransford 76). This phenomenon can be explained through examining the implications of geographical isolation, the effects of large-scale migration, and alluding to a specific example of disease transference in Africa from the west to the east. Because of geographic isolation, human societies develop either genetic or cultural defenses againstâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Both of these resettlements spiked disease morbidity and mortality rates to epidemic proportions. ââ¬Å"The inhabitants of the Belgian Congo before 1880 were estimated to number about 40 million; by 1910 the figure had dropped to 15.5 million, and was 9.25 million in 1933â⬠(Ransford 76). One of the devastating diseases that was carried to East Africa was sleeping sickness (Ransford 111). The tsetse fly carries the sleeping sickness parasite, Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, and transmits it through its bite (African Trypanosomiasis). The isolated tribeââ¬â¢s total lack of immunity and the eastern migratory shift increased both the severity and rapidity of this disease for Eastern African regions. For example, the decline in the population of Lukolela from less than 6,000 in 1891 to only a little more than 700 in 1896, is due to this type of disease transference (Ransford 128). Because the time during European Imperialism ignited mass movements within the African continent, the foreign invaders inevitably brought with them diseases to which the native peoples of that region were not immune (Ransford 47). Millions of human beings were affected by the unusual migration patterns, on both the part of the Europeans and the Africans, which upset the ecological barriers and generated devastating results. The physical activity I take part in, and other leisure time activities such as hanging out with my friends and visual entertainment (TV and video games), takes up 25% of my week, which is 1 quarter. I also found that I spend 33% of my week (56 hours) sleeping. This is a lot of leisure time thatââ¬â¢s spent sleeping, instead of other activities. I spend most of my week with school related activities and responsibilities such as class, homework, council, and walking between classes. Since I rarely travel because of living on residence, I only travel about 4-6 hours a week on transit which is only 3%. The rest of my free time during the week is spent doing residence chores such as cleaning, cooking, and organizing. This takes up about 9% of my weekly schedule. It would seem that in total most of my leisure time is spent doing physical activities, and things that I would like to do, instead of things that rather constrain me from participating. However, when she speaks to individuals or groups, she does so with her eyes shut. When she opens them periodically, she stares off in a direction away from the listener. She is perceived as incompetent by those with whom she consults. One technique to help with this is to consciously look into one of the listenerââ¬â¢s eyes and then move to the other. Going back and forth between the two (and I hope they only have two) makes your eyes appear to sparkle. Another trick is to imagine a letter ââ¬Å"Tâ⬠on the listenerââ¬â¢s face with the cross bar being an imaginary line across the eye brows and the vertical line coming down the center of the nose. Keep your eyes scanning that ââ¬Å"Tâ⬠zone. 9. Use gestures ââ¬â Make your whole body talk. Use smaller gestures for individuals and small groups. The gestures should get larger as the group that one is addressing increases in size. 10. Donââ¬â¢t send mixed messages ââ¬â Make your words, gestures, facial expressions, tone, and message match. Applicants need to read the fine print in every legal document they sign, as a personal release form gives TV producers the rights to film them during every aspect of the program. If you apply to appear on a reality program, you have no grounds to complain about lack of privacy, or that you cannot control what ends up on TV. Every stipulation usually appears in personal and location release forms, as well as informed consent forms. Harmful Effects to Reputation When participants surrender their rights to privacy, they may not consider reality TVs long-term effects, subjecting themselves to potentially humiliating events that harm their reputation. Some participants emerge unscathed and parlay bad reputations into other ventures, but others may experience less fortune. If participants engage in questionable behavior and it appears on television, it could impact their relationships with family and friends, not to mention employers and the law. Established celebrities have no immunity to reality TVs consequences; any questionable behavior on a reality program may cause Hollywood to have little to no interest in working with celebrities on future projects. The Editing Process and Inauthenticity Viewers often wonder if reality TV projects real-life, unscripted moments. Programs like Foxs COPS depend on authentic interaction between law enforcement and criminals. Most reality shows, though, may edit programs to fit their own agenda, presenting viewers expecting reality with inauthentic programming. Such actions may result in exaggerations of events or painting participants in an inaccurate, non-flattering light. Participants in programs like The Real World claim producers influence what people do on camera. Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, who emerged with a less-than-flattering reputation while on NBCs The Apprentice, told Time magazine that producers never filmed her when she was making nice, only during heated, great-for-TV moments. Some participants use reality TV as a means to portray a type of person they could not be in real life. Such was the case for Russell Kairouz, who claims that his jerk-like behavior was all a show on on CBS Big Brother in summer 2009. Regardless of whether reality shows fake it, most viewers do not seem to mind, according to a 2006 Time poll. More than half of respondents said that accuracy did not impact their enjoyment of a program, while less than one-third believed reality shows depicted real experiences.
